In the Dinosaur Badlands most surface materials are so dispersive and highly erodible that flow concentration alone is the necessary condition for rill initiation. The experiments carried out in this research project have demonstrated clear
if the conditions necessary for their initiation are no longer fulfilled. In the badlands the relationship is exemplified by the continued development of rills on sandstones slopes even after capping shale units have disappeared.
