Subglacial hydrology and drumlin sediments in Connemara, Western Ireland
This paper describes the internal sediments from 2 significant drumlin exposures at Ardmore and Ballyconneely, west County Galway. Both drumlins show a lowermost lithofacies association comprising overconsolidated subglacial diamicton with clast
lithology, strong fabrics and overfolds indicative of regional east/southeast to west/northwest late Weichselian ice flow. This lithofacies association is overlain at both sites by west-dipping, stratified, graded gravel and diamicton beds that downlap onto
laminated silts. These beds reflect episodic debris flows into a leeside cavity developed following creation of relief by deposition and deformation of a subglacial diamicton nucleus located up-ice. Variations in substrate hydrological processes
are identified in both drumlins. These features reflect the close connection between subglacial hydrological and sedimentary processes and their changes over time as the drumlin form develops.

Is the hydrologic cycle sustainable ? A historical-geographical critique of a modern concept

This paper describes the gestation of the hydrologic cycle as a distinct entity in the English-speaking hydrological tradition and explains how and why it attained a specific form in the United States in the 1930s. This modern hydrologic cycle
, it is argued, internalizes the historical and geographical circumstances in which it was formed; namely a northern temperate society in the throes of modern, state-led industrial development. These circumstances, however, no longer pertain to a majority
of people. To the extent that it structures an understanding of water that is increasingly at odds with social and hydrological experience, the modern hydrologic cycle can be considered unsustainable.

of publication within the academy, and associated with meetings of the academy. Although national societies now have to contemplate significantly different purposes to provide for their members than in the twentieth century, there are opportunities available
that cannot be fulfilled by international organizations alone.

Samples of suspended and fine channel bed sediment were used to examine the spatial and temporal variability in the amount of fine-grained sediment and associated contaminants temporarily stored in the Na Borges River in Mallorca
and the relationship of such channel storage to the fluxes of fine sediment and associated contaminant through the system. This Mediterranean groundwater-dominated river drains a predominantly agricultural catchment, although urbanisation during the twentieth century
has changed the catchment hydrology. A re-suspension technique was used to obtain estimates of channel storage at monthly intervals during the 2004-2005 hydrological year at 8 locations along the main stream. The results demonstrated significant

This study uses a combination of evidence from ground penetrating radar, borehole, video, and wireless probe data to assess temporal changes in englacial water content associated with Briksdalsbreen, a rapidly retreating Norwegian glacier. Over a 13
water then drained during cold, high precipitation days, allowing the radar wave-velocity to rise. These changes in englacial storage were caused by the enhanced crevassing generated by the newly floating ice margin, and were associated with accelerated

This paper aims to : examine melt season suspended sediment storage and release patterns in relation to hydrological conditions in the proglacial zone of a rapidly retreating European Alpine glacier; and 2) evaluate the findings in the light of past
daily mean river flow records. The Morteratsch valley is located in the Bernina massif, within the eastern part of the Swiss Alps. Suspended sediment concentration measured during July 2007 was closely associated with discharge. The results emphasise

. Results of this study indicate that variation in the hydrological response of ash can be partially explained by differences in ash characteristics associated with combustion temperature. Furthermore while ash color is often used as an indicator of burn
This study investigated the physical (particle size and shape, particle density, bulk density and porosity) chemical (mineralogy and elemental composition) and hydrologic (water retention, hydraulic conductivity, and sorptivity) characteristics
of laboratory and wildfire ash from the Northern Rocky Mountain region of the United States. A variety of techniques were used including scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and conventional soil science techniques
severity it may not be an accurate indicator regarding the hydrologic response of ash in post-fire systems. Instead carbonate content is suggested as a more informative aid in predicting post-fire hydrologic response.
