: the role that landscape ecological theories may have in integrating existing principles from applied biogeography and population biology; the unique insights provided by a landscape ecological approach. Finally, he argues that biogeographers need to be more
The A. discusses the application of landscape ecological principles to a specific and pressing issue: nature reserve design and functioning. He reviews 5 landscape ecological themes with relevance to reserve design and management. He studies
active in the development and advancement of landscape ecological theory.

Besides the investigations into the basic elements of the ecological spatial networks : the ecological matrix areas, corridors of barriers and also the biocores and buffer zones, the analysis of the edge-zones, the so-called ecotons
, is an increasingly popular topic of landscape ecology. The ecological role of the edge zones is proportional to the contrast between the ecological properties of the areas they separate. The ecological contrast is the sharpest possible round the town outskirts. - (ZK)
Method for calculating ecological water storage and ecological water requirement of marsh

In this study, the definition and connotation of the ecological water storage of marsh is discussed, and its distinction and relationship with ecological water requirement are also analyzed. Furthermore, the gist and method of calculating ecological
water storage and ecological water requirement have been provided, and Momoge wetland, (located in Zhenlai county, Jilin Province, China), has been given as an example of calculation of the two variables. Ecological water use of marsh can be ascertained
according to ecological water storage and ecological water requirement.
Landscape ecology. Geographical research direction or an interdisciplinary research programme?
The landscape ecology existing in geography since the time of A. von HUMBOLDT, was named landscape physiology . Since C. TROLL (1939) obtained the name landscape ecology . From the point of view of geography it is a complex research aiming
to the rational space organisation of landscape. As an interdisciplinary applied research programme it is open to biology and other landscape sciences. - (MS)
Fire in the cerrado (savannas) of Brazil : an ecological review
Biodiversity ; Biogeography ; Brazil ; Ecology ; Environmental management ; Fire ; Savanna
Fire is a major determinant of cerrado (savanna) vegetation in Brazil, and is used as a management tool during the dry season. This article reviews past and present fire ecology studies in the cerrado, (abiotic, biotic, social studies and management
studies), and emphasizes the need for a more applied approach to future work.

The importance of ecological footprint was recognised in the 1980s as part of the concept of sustainable development. In this paper, A. attempts to calculate the ecological footprint of Hungary. First the concept of environmental protection
and sustainable development is introduced, then the method of ecological footprint is demonstrated. - (JS)
This paper assesses the fate of applied phosphatic fertiliser over a 30 year period on a grassland site that was rotationally grazed by beef animals for each grass growing season. The total loss of P fertiliser via overland flow over 30 years from
plots is evaluated with a Morgan's soil test. Mass balance studies showed over 75 percent of the applied P remained in the soil. A large portion of this phosphorus was accumulated near the soil surface.
Based on the mapped ecological factors, according primarily to the principles applied by the landscape ecological school in the GDR (Standort-typisierung), landscape components quasi-homogeneous for agricultural use have been delimited applying
The study focuses on applicability of soil related ecological indicators in small scale studies. Three soil related indices were studied along a hydromorph toposequence, such as Simon’s W, R and Soó’s N values. Simon’s T value also was applied
to compare applicability soil related ecological indicators with non-soil related ones for small areas. These values were determined on the basis of cenological measurement and compared with soil physical and chemical properties. Authors’ results suggest
that W values can be use only for small scale ecological indications. - (AM)
theoretically nuanced and historically grounded conception of the intersections between critical cultural discourses and recent advances in urban ecology might provide a useful counterpoint to narrowly utilitarian approaches to urban nature.

The aim of this article is to point to the possible interface between landscape-ecological planning and programmes supported by the European Community. Priorities and measures embraced by SAPARD (Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural
