in the polar region and the collection of numerous arguments of various geoscientific aspects AlfredWegener has stimulated the modern, mobilistic conception of plate tectonics. (Ed.).
The life of the most famous German polarresearcher is described. The investigations during his four journeys to Greenland are considered in detail. Through his hypothesis concerning the drift of the continents derived from localizations
This is a report of a trip for International Polar Year 2007/2008. Preparations for a trip to the end of the world started months earlier. First was the tedious selection process by the sponsor, Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI) for Polar and Ocean
Research in Bremerhaven (Germany) followed by an extensive medical exam in July 2006. Special cold resistant clothing had to be tested in the summer heat. Finally, several packs of equipment were shipped ahead to Antarctica. visits to schools participating
in the didactical side program and many media contacts followed. On 15 October 2006 the trip started with 22 hours flight to the city of Christchurch (New Zealand) which hosts the logistic center of the U.S. and N.Z. Antarctic research. - (IfL)

Because the facilities for research work in many scientific fields are good in the circumpolar north, every effort to widen cooperation between researchinstitutes should be supported. In this article we try to explain the need
for such international research, using the Kevo subarctic research station of the university of Turku as an example. (Ed).
