The spatialization of politics: local and national actor-spaces in environmental conflict
The locality approach requires attention to the ways in which actors in local situations are tied into wider sets of relations. A perspective of micro-sociology is introduced to facilitate the analysis of the links, or associations, between actors
-in-situations, or actor-spaces. The study of an environmental conflict around minerals development shows that in practice the local and the national become mixed up as actors build associations in pursuit of their goals.
False antitheses ? Marxism, nature and actor-networks
Taking a non-orthodox Marxist perspective, the A. argues that the actor-network theory critique of political economy approaches to nature is overstated and partly defensible. By distinguishing between different modalities of eco-marxism and ANT, he
Strategic coupling in ‘next wave cities’ : local institutional actors and the offshore service sector in the Philippines
This paper looks at the scope for agency of local institutional actors in the investment attraction of business process outsourcing companies. Drawing on empirical work from the Philippines, an analysis of the process of integrating lower-tier
cities into global service production networks is presented. Specifically, the roles of local institutional actors in facilitating FDI attraction and strategically coupling local assets with the needs of multinational service corporations are discussed
. Two contrasting cases, the cities of Baguio and Bacolod, show that considerable scope for intervention rests with local institutional actors. The findings have implications for policymaking and research concerned with the newest phase of outsourcing

The growing influence of neoliberal approaches to environmental governance has increased the involvement of industry non-state actors in international and national climate governance. The AA. examine the regulatory and territorial logics
underpinning the negotiation and implementation of the European Union emissions trading scheme. The alliances between state and industry actors strongly influence the scheme's design. Speculative behaviour indicates the continued ability of market networks
: that actors might behave opportunistically and in case of problems, assigning problem ownership and responsibility to specific actors may be difficult. It concludes, in order for more collaborative and decentralized forms of governance to function, involved
actors on both central and lower levels of government paradoxically require coordinative instruments to enable coordination, to hold each other accountable for their performance, and to establish rules and sanctions.
