Regional distribution and biodiversity perspectives of Finnish grasslands
Agricultural land use ; Biodiversity ; Biogeography ; Biotope ; Bird ; Finland ; Grassland ; Habitat ; Land use ; Spatial distribution
In this study, the regional distribution of Finnish grasslands was studied using an existing nationwide digital land-use database. Further, the occurrence of traditional rural biotopes and selected butterfly and bird species living in different
grassland habitats was investigated in relation to agricultural landscape mosaic. The results show that grasslands enrich the Finnish agricultural landscape both at the habitat and species level. In addition to species-rich semi-natural grasslands, other low
-productive grasslands also hold significant potential in the maintenance of diverse agricultural environments.
Grassland degradation in the Three-River Headwaters region, Qinghai Province
Biogeography ; China ; Grassland ; Qinghai ; Remote sensing ; Satellite imagery ; Spatial variation ; Vegetation degradation ; Vegetation index ; Years 1970-79 ; Years 1990-99
In order to acquire objectively spatial-temporal processes of grassland degradation, MSS images in the mid and late 1970s, TM images in the early 1990s and TM/ETM images in 2004 were used. Grassland degradation in the Three-River Headwaters (TRH
) region was interpreted through analysis on RS images in 2 time series, then the spatial and temporal characteristics of grassland degradation in the TRH region were analyzed since the 1970s. Because grassland degradation had obviously regional differences
in the TRH region, it could be regionalized into 7 zones, and each zone had different characteristics in type, grade, scale and time process of grassland degradation.
Untersuchungen zur Struktur und Funktion von naturnahen und immissionsbelasteten Grasland-Okosystemen. (Investigations into structure and function of almost natural and immission-loaded grassland-ecosystems)
Since 1970 the Department of Ecology of Jena University has been investigating the structure, function and succession of almost natural and immission loaded grassland ecosystems. The synecological investigations have been focussed
Standortkundliche Typisierung des Graslandes in der DDR auf der Grundlage der Mittelmassstäbigen Landwirtschaftlichen Standortkartierung. (Pedological description of GDR grassland types on the basis of medium-scale agricultural mapping)
On the basis of medium-scale agricultural mapping six site groups are differentiated for GDR grassland. These are low-bog sites, Pleistocene sandy sites, Pleistocene loam and clay sites, bottomland sites, loess sites, and alpine sites. Altogether 57
pedological grassland types have been classified in subgroups and described according to parameters for land unit regional types and the area covered. Decisive aspects are almost equal and stable site characteristics, such as soil conditions, essential water
Influences of continuous grazing and livestock exclusion on soil properties in degraded sandy grassland, Inner Mongolia, northern China
China ; Desertification ; Erosion control ; Grassland ; Inner Mongolia ; Land use ; Over-grazing ; Semi-arid area ; Soil erosion ; Soil properties
Overgrazing is one of the main causes of desertification in the semiarid Horqin sandy grassland of northern China. In this paper, characteristics of vegetation and soil properties under continuous grazing and exclusion of livestock for 5 and 10
years were examined in representative degraded sandy grassland. The results suggest that excluding grazing livestock on the desertified sandy grassland in the erosion-prone Horqin region has a great potential to restore soil fertility, sequester soil
Mass movement effects on grassland vegetation and soils on Santa Cruz Island, California
The purpose of this study is : 1) to identify the changes in surface soil properties due to mass movement disturbances, and 2) to investigate the patterns in grassland vegetation distributions associated with such heterogeneity.
The erodibility of soils beneath wildfire prone grasslands in the humid tropics, Hong Kong
Drainage ; Erodibility ; Fire ; Grassland ; Hong Kong ; Organic materials ; Porosity ; Soil erosion ; Soil properties ; Tropical zone
This paper examines the interrelationships between aggregate stability, soil physicochemical properties and pore size charateristics which determine soil erodibility. The study is based in an area of the humid tropics where grassland fires
Early nineteenth-century grasslands of the Midcontinent Plains
Biogeography ; Ecosystem ; Grassland ; Historical geography ; Human impact ; Palaeobotany ; Palynology ; Taxonomy ; Thematic mapping ; United States ; Vegetation dynamics
The A. examines ecological theory, existing maps, and explorer journals, with the support of data on contemporary grass patterns and interpretation of the grassland paleobotanical record built from anlyses of opal phytoliths that were contained
Grassland vegetation in the Southern Great Plains during the last glacial maximum
Biogeography ; Climatic variation ; Fauna ; Grassland ; Palaeo-environment ; Palynology ; Pollen diagram ; Quaternary ; Texas ; United States of America ; Vegetation
A reevaluation of the White Lake pollen record and development of the new Friesenhahn Cave record were undertaken to examine the issue of wether the southern Great Plains was dominated by forest or grassland during the late Wisconsin Glaciation.
Die Verteilung der Grünlandstandorte in der DDR und ihre differenzierte Kennzeichnung nach Standortfaktoren. (Distribution of grassland stands in the GDR and their differentiated marking according to stand factors)
To determine what kind of stands may be used of grassland and to what extent an assessment was made of the substrate and hydromorphic conditions, slope incline, stone content as well as of specific features of location in each district
. The relations existing between certain local factors and the use of areas as grassland are dealt with for the GDR as a whole as well as for some of its regions. (HL).
This paper explores the soil nutrient pools of 14 young dry grasslands and compares them to the nutrient pools on heathlands, forested and agricultural land. On 2 sites, the plant species composition is compared to characteristic species for the EU
Soil seed banks on Argentine seminatural mountain grasslands after cessation of grazing
AA. studied seed banks and above-ground vegetation in sites ungrazed for 22 years and in 3 different grazed sites in seminatural grasslands in central Argentina. Grazing changed species abundance and vertical structure, but did not cause a loss
of species. Seed bank richness, diversity, and abundance were found to have decreased significantly during grassland succession following the cessation of grazing. - (SLD)
This paper assesses the fate of applied phosphatic fertiliser over a 30 year period on a grassland site that was rotationally grazed by beef animals for each grass growing season. The total loss of P fertiliser via overland flow over 30 years from
Soil CO2 concentration and microclimatic parameters were measured at a primary forest and grassland in dry season (August to September 2003) and rainy season (March 2004) in central Amazonia in order to investigate the effects of infiltration
Vegetation influences on water yields from grassland and shrubland ecosystems in the Chihuahuan desert
Ecosystem ; Grassland ; New Mexico ; Rainfall simulation ; Runoff ; Semi-arid area ; United States of America ; Vegetation ; Water balance ; Watershed
This study examines runoff generated under simulated rainfall on Summerford bajada in the Jornada Basin, New Mexico, USA, to examine and quantify the role that changing vegetation, (grassland, shrubland), has played in altering the hydrologic
