Channel avulsion and river metamorphosis : the case of the Thomson River, Victoria, Australia

This paper is concerned with stream avulsion in terms of the channel morphology and the relative distribution of floodwater between the channel and the floodplain for the old and new courses especially as this affects stream power. On the example of the Thomson River, the reliability of palaeochannel characteristics as indicators of environmental conditions is discussed.
