Description :
The AA. concentrate upon recognition of individual reef units within the late Pleistocene Makatea limestones, and dating of corals from them by U-series disequilibrium dating. They demonstrate variability in the elevation of contemporaneous reefs on each of the islands, implying that differential movement of the islands has been continuing over the last 250,000 years. These results in turn place major constraints upon geophysical modeling of properties of the lithosphere.
