Description :
Morphological changes of estuarine channels and tidal flats depend on erosion, sediment transport and deposition. This thesis focuses on a smaller part of this system : the settling of mud flocs in an estuary. The research is based on measurements of the size and settling velocity of mud flocs in the Dollard estuary on different time and spatial scales. It is concluded that turbulent shear and residence times play an essential role in flocculation dynamics. Furthermore it is showed that biological factors may be just as significant for flocculation dynamics as physical factors. - (AGD)
