Description :
Parts of the study sites in the Steigerwald Mountains (northern Bavaria) had been cultivated and were re-forested at least 60 years ago. Soil erosion has removed the upper materials, exposing deposits to contamination from the surface, which same deposits have remained protected by overlying cover-beds nearby. At 3 sites, the AA. compare heavy metal concentrations within such deposits across a boundary of varying protection. This approach allows for quantifying post-depositional alteration at suitable sites; it is superior to any procedure considering just vertical profiles, and it may help to calibrate such procedures.
