Description :
The paper examines the growth of and structural changes in the service sector in the Warsaw Agglomeration during the first years of the transformation of the Polish economy after 1989. The analysis is based mainly on employment data for the establishments employing more than five persons. The main questions this paper seeks to answer are : 1) Which service activities are leading ones ? 2) To what extent is the whole groups of services primarily ? 3) Could any tendencies of deconcentration towards smaller cities and towns in the Warsaw Agglomeration be observed, and if so what are the regional beneficiaries of this movement and why, 4) Is the expected absorbing force of Warsaw differentiated according to the types of service activities ? The paper ends with some comments on the role of Warsaw as mapped out by politicians and urban planners and set against the results of scientific analysis. - (BJ)
