Description :
The GDR was the world biggest lignite producing country, but attendant symptoms were uneconomic management and environmental destruction. The development in two eastern mining areas is characterised by a dramatic decrease of lignite benefication from 300 Mt in 1989 to 64 Mt in 1998. The former mining areas were introduced a recultivation programme, financed by the federal government and the Länder. Until 1999 more than 10 milliard DM had been expended for the land restoration ; new post-mining landscapes with lakes, recreational facilities, forests and agricultural areas are developing. - (HPB)
