Description :
In comparison to the old Länder, where only 1,7% of the population live in large housing estates with more than 2500 flats, in the new Länder the proportion is at 23%. Since 1990 to the deficiencies in the dormitory suburbs new problems were added, intensified by an unfamiliar image brought in from outside. The article presents the example of Leipzig-Grünau, one of the largest areas of new buildings in Germany, where a forward-looking planning was initiated by the Federal Government. This includes professionals and all persons from the borough participating to work out strategies, recommendations, guidelines and visions for its functional, spatial, architectural and social-welfare development. - (HPB)
