Description :
The industrial sector was by far the most important within the planned socialist economy of the GDR. After unification, the Treuhandgesellschaft sold, reprivatised or closed down virtually all the former state economy. Many jobs were lost through a continuing lack of competitiveness. Despite far-reaching initiatives to introduce modern technology and quality standards, there remains a gap in labour productivity between East and West Germany. Unemployment rates stayed high, about double those of the old Länder. On a regional basis, a shift towards suburban locations can now be oberved. East German industry will be dependent on substantial government support in coming years. - (HPB)
