A triple crown for Padre Neumann : the first reported earthquake, comet, and eclipse in Chihuahua

Auteurs :
BROWN, R.
SINCLAIR, R.

Description :
Article is about a portion of the journal kept by Joseph Neumann, who served as a Jesuit missionary in the Sierra Tarahumara of northwestern Mexico from 1681 to 1732. His journal describes the only North-American report of a bright comet of 1695, the first report of a 1696 earthquake, and a partial solar eclipse of 1696. He believed that these events presaged a Tarahumara uprising against Spanish rule en 1697. - (SLD)
