This study explores the role of the factors conditioning rural diversification and industrialisation in Bantul District, a densely populated district in Central Java. Attention has concentrated mainly on the characteristics and the linkages of rural industries within their regional framework. At the same time, attention has been paid to extra-regional factors and historical developments which are - or have been - relevant to rural industrialisation in the study area. - (AGD)
