Description :
Results of the geomorphological analysis of bathymetric and dredge data, obtained in 1985-1990 during several cruises of Russian research vessels in the area between 12°N and 17°N near the Kyushu-Palau Ridge juncture with the Central Basin Fault are presented. Three types of volcanic edifices are distinguished, large plateau-like Hawaïan-type shield volcanoes and two different stratovolcano types. By chemical composition the rocks of the shield volcanoes can be classified as Hawaiian-type tholeiites and their differentiates. Stages of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge development conform with the evolution of the Philippine Sea as a whole.
