Description :
Distribution of mountain protected areas of the Andean Cordillera and the extent of the arid diagonal, the zone from SW Ecuador to eastern Argentina, are compared. Authors find very few mountains protected areas in the most arid ecosystems, from about 18 to 30° S. Noting that the recharge of water resources there is presently very limited, they call for establishment of new protected areas that will assure sufficient water for human development and nature conservation. - (SLD)
