Recent fluctuations of Glaciar Pío Xi, Patagonia : discussion of a glacial surge hypothesis

Auteurs :
RIVERA, A.
ARAVENA, J.
CASASSA, G.

Description :
Although there is a general glacier retreat in mid-latitude Patagonia, Glaciar Pío XI has been advancing during the last 50 years. Author postulate that the advance periods have corresponded to glacial surges. Four models of explanation of the surges were tested - increased basal water pressure, increased geothermal activity, increased precipitation, and reduction in the rate of calving due to proglacial sedimentation. data used was insufficient to support any one of the proposed models. - (SLD)
