Transhumance and customary pastoral rights in Himachal Pradesh : claiming the high pastures for Gaddis

Auteur :
CHAKRAVARTY-KAUL, M.

Description :
Gaddi Shepherds have had horizontal and vertical access to pastoral resources in the mountain commons for many years. During this time, they have maintained relationships with cultivators in the valleys and plains that sustained an ecological balance in both the mountains and lowlands. Since the nineteenth century, changes in the political economy of the plains and an erosion of customary institutions in the mountains have threatened the precarious livelihood of the Gaddis. - (SLD)
