Observations on deforestation and alpine turf destruction in the Central Wutai Mountains, Shanxi Province, China
Auteur :ROST, K.
Description :
Wutai Shan, a Buddhist pilgrimage site since the 5th century, has a long history of extensive deforestation and intensive land use. By the end of the 19th century, the mountains had become widely deforested. Radiocarbon dates on wood and charcoal fragments indicate a lowering of the timberline 2,000 to 3,000 years ago. Alpine meadow has slight damage from over-grazing, but author is concerned that more grazing and tourism will cause irreversible damage to it in the future. - (SLD)
