Investigating portering relations as a locus for transcultural interaction in the Karakorum region of northern Pakistan

Auteurs :
MACDONALD, K.
BUTZ, D.

Description :
The Karakorum region of northern Pakistan has long been a contact zone between indigenous people and outsiders. Paper outlines some theoretical concepts relevant to understanding portering as a way of cross-cultural interaction : contact zone, transculturation, discursive formations, and public and hidden transcripts. Adventure tourism, european regulation of porter employment in the 19th century, and indigenous resistance to unequal labor relations are discussed. - (SLD)
