Settlement and changing land use in the Chitwan district of Nepal

Special issue. Agriculture - systems - landscapes - resources

Description :
This paper focuses on how population growth and the process of continued migration from the Hill Region and settlement in the Terai Region of Nepal result in considerable changes in land use and fragmentation of land-holdings. It is argued that the increasing pressures on arable land and the lack of sufficient alternative employment in Chitwan District challenge the environmental and social sustainability of the region. Furthermore, it is concluded that the concern for environmental sustainability in Nepal should extend its strong focus from the Hill Region to include the increasing social and environmental changes of the Terai Region.
