Investigated are the origins of two types of city parks, the large landscape park of the Victorian Era (1840-1890) and the small playground parks of the Progressive Era (1890-1920). Their spatial patterns of diffusion among large cities in the United States are mapped. Both types of parks, although serving different clientele, started in the industrial cities of northeastern United States. - (SLD)
