Looking at maps in the dark. Directions for geographical research in land management and sustainable development in rural and urban environments of the Third World

Auteurs :
DE HAAN, L.
BLAIKIE, P.

Description :
The origins of this book lie in a series of papers presented at the symposium on Land management and sustainable development of the Third World, organized by the Third World Commission of the IGU at the 1996 International Geographical Congress in the Hague, The Netherlands. Participants were asked to discuss in their presentations how local environmental knowledge could be made useful with respect to the distinctiveness of indigenous and scientific knowledge. In addition, poverty alleviation and political participation were acknowledged by most participants as fundamental conditions for solving environmental problems in developing countries and a point of departure for exploring new avenues in geographical research in the domain of man-land relationships. - (AGD)
