Description :
This thesis considers the significance of touristic-recreational processes for the social and physical environment in the Euregio Maas-Rijn, a border region in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. It demonstrates that the conctruction of tourist attractions take place in a context of opposing and competing claims. The study focuses on the strategies deployed by environmental organisations, municipal and regional administrators, tourist entrepreneurs and inhabitants of the Maas-Rhine region in appropriating the environment for their own or collective interests. The specific sectional interests that are decisive to the social, symbolic and material design of the countryside are examined. Special attention is paid to the role boundaries play in attraction formation. The theoretical framework is based upon the Theory of Communicative Action of Habermas. The author concludes that the construction of tourist attractions is not primarily dictated by considerations of material reproduction (profit, economic growth and success) but by processes of both symbolic and material reproduction. - (AGD)
