Due to favourable geographical conditions the Bohemian part of the Elbe River has traditionally formed three important regions (Pardubice, Mělník, Ústí s. Elbe) where population, productive agriculture and chemical, alimentation, power plants and other industry tend to concentrate. In contrast to major European rivers, howewer, water pollution has been recently given attention. In the followed period, many aspects of water quality have changed. Now major sites have sewage plants and especially industrial pollution has been partly elimitated. - (MS)
