Description :
This paper reports on 3 efforts, each having produced a prototype computer system for landform interpretation. The first is the computational identification of drainage patterns, represented in vector format, through structural pattern-recognition. The second uses expert-system methods to address terrain knowledge-representation through the landform-pattern element approach and to construct prototype expert-systems for inferring landforms from user observations of pattern elements. The third develops a visual vocabulary of pattern elements through a Macintosh-based hypermedia system.
