Description :
Wooden constructions - dwellings, outbuildings, fences and hay stackers are discussed and mapped for Western North America including Alaska and Canada. Major centers of innovation are identified in southwestern Montana, Mormon Utah, Hispanic New Mexico and the eastern Sacramento Valley. The West is seen as a bewildering assemblage of unique places in which continuity, innovation and ethnicity have all shaped this diversity. The culture of the American West is not monolithic as has so often been portrayed. - (DWG)
