This paper presents the review of previous studies of Franz Josef land (FJL) glaciation and the first results of glaciological investigations carried out in May-June 1994. The present conditions on FJL mostly prevent cryokarst in the central parts of ice caps. However, there is some relatively strong evidences of complicated ice structure and cavities presence within the margin parts of the glaciers.
