Sea level variability

Perspectives in coastal geomorphology of Western Crete, Greece

Auteurs :

Description :
The level of the ocean changes with time by a number of different causes. The rates and amplitudes of these changes differ. During the last 5000 years, the eustatic changes have been dominated by the redistribution of water masses due to changes in the oceanic circulation systems. The sea-level changes to be expected in the next century are estimated on the basis of past and present sea-level changes and their driving forces; a possible future sea level rise in the next century will, at the most, be in the order of 20 cm which is significantly less than usually claimed.
