Jesuit missions in Spanish America: the aftermath of the expulsion

Auteurs :
MERINO, O.
NEWSOM, L.A.

Description :
After the Jesuits were expelled from Latin America in 1767, their 18 major mission territories from northern Mexico to southern Chile were secularized, taken over by other missionary orders, or abandoned. Various factors were at work: shortage of clergy, lack of financial support, new administration, depopulation, or political conflict. - (DWG)
