Description :
At the end of the winter the fast ice cover of the Liefdefiord shows a very homogeneous thickness. Thickness and decay of the sea-ice are influenced by the northernmost branch of the Gulfstream. High salinities and water temperatures (over 7°C), fresh water intake from the mainland and special morphological features, for example breath holes of seals, or icebergs favour the decay of the sea ice. Despite of the short ice-free period of about four and a half months the geomorphological impact of the open sea on the coastal geomorphology is relatively high.
