This study focuses on four possible new functions : water production, pluri-activity on farms, recreation and tourism and new rural residential options. For each function indicators are chosen. The presence of large population concentrations, the accessibility and the landscape attractiveness appear to be important indicators of the demand for new functions. Such qualities are often rooted in long historical processes ; so the search of new functions means back into the future. Four case studies : North Portugal, Auvergne and Limousin in France ; Baden-Württemberg in Germany and West Midlands in England. - (AGD)
