In the Western province of Romania, Banat, the human impact upon the soil had different consequences, the AA. distinguishing 3 areas of impact. The mountaneous area, covered sometime by forest, experienced opposite results, like erosion and bioaccumulation. In the piedmont, irrigation damaged the physical properties of the soil and induced a Na accumulation. In the low plain, where the marshes were the main landscape before the eighteenth century, land reclamation provoked the descending of the water table, on one hand, but also a salinization of the top soil, on the other hand. - (M.
