Description :
Reappraisal of existing data and evidence derived from new geological investigations illustrates the often complex association between fault geometry and seismic activity that characterise five seismically active areas of mainland Greece. Morphotectonic, structural, seismotectonic and image analysis carried out in the area of the 1978 Thessaloniki (M 6.5) earthquake highlights the multi-fractured character of this seismogenic zone, previously interpreted as having a relatively simple seismotectonic setting in which E-W trending active fault zones accommodate N-S extension.
