Outward orientation and marginal environments : the question of sustainable development in the Norte Chico, Chile

Auteur :
GWYNNE, R.N.

Description :
Four valleys of Chile's Near North region - Limari, Copiapo, Elqui, Choapa - have a hot dry climate. Production of table grapes for export now dominates agricultural land use, especially in the Limari and Copiapo valleys. Commercial farms are getting larger and much water now comes from wells drilled in the aquifer. Problems of land and water, critical in sustaining economic growth there, are leading to an eventual crisis. The A. believes the Chilean government needs to regulate and plan water use in this region. - (DWG)
