After independence, the policy of isolating the pastoral regions was abolished. Instead, the official planning emphasizes the need to utilize the natural and animal resources of the arid and semi-arid lands for the national economy. The main targets are the modernization of the livestock sector and the establishment of an efficient livestock marketing system. The pastoral rangelands are supposed to serve as suppliers of immatures for the commercial ranches and feeding loots in more favourable regions. Besides, mainly the potential for irrigated agriculture is developed.
