From the late sixties onwards, many so-called rural centre planning strategies have been developed aiming at the establishment of basic socio-economic services in a hierarchical network of population centres in rural areas. This study is based upon field research carried out in the Republic of Mali, in four administrative districts : Djenné, San, Tominian and Koutelia. It gives insight in the supply structure of public services, it analyses the use of those services and it assesses the factors influencing the differentiation in the use of services. Finally it evaluates the usefulness of a rural centre planning approach. - (AGD)
