Description :
This chapter has shown that knowledge of gully typology, as well as of factors controlling gully development, is crucial for erosion risk mapping as well as for selecting and applying gully prevention and control measures. Contrary to interrill and partly also rill erosion, knowledge of the thickness and of the resistance properties of soil sublayers in areas where overland concentrates seem to be crucial for gully risk assessment. Results from this study indicate that vane shear strength of the soil sublayers, measured after artificial wetting, is an adequate indicator of their resistance to concentrated flow erosion. Finally, testing of structural measures to control a gully associated with a bank reveals the potential of geosynthetics. - (Les AA.).
