The paper presents an assessment of the quality of natural environment of Poland. It reveals that by the end of the 1980s, the level of environmental pollution was generally much higher than today. The decrease in the pollution level has been caused, firstly by the economic recession of 1980-1990, and, secondly by the improvement of environment quality caused by actions aimed at nature protection. These efforts have mainly resulted from Poland's obligations as an associate member of the European Union. As the authors indicate, bringing the system of environmental protection in line with requirements of the EU, will be very costly but necessary. - (BJ)
