This paper provides an analysis of the role of regional lines in the national railway system of Hungary. The 1990s can be characterised in Hungary by a rapid decline in rail transport and the dynamic growth of road transport. The biggest loss of traffic could be observed on the branch lines which make up 41 percent of the total national railway lines. According to the author the decline of rail transport in Hungary has been partly due to an inadequate investment policy and modernisation in the earlier decades. - (ZK)
