The process of political regionalism within the European Union is overviewed, enlisting the tasks of the main regional organisations and mechanism of their operation. It is emphasized that the elaboration of NUTS (a regional statistical system independent of the national statistics of the member states) plays an important role to make the future trends prevailing in different euroregions comparable with each other. The paper deals with a fundamental role to be played by euroregions in the future of the continent, where state borders are to be downgraded and the weakening of nation states is expected to lead eventually to the formation of regional self-awareness. - (ZK)
