The floodplains are increasingly threatened by heavy metal pollution. This is because of the accumulation of these elements from water and air as well. The vertical element distribution of alluvial soils can be influenced by several factors. Some of the most important ones are Al-, Fe-, Mn-oxides and hydroxides. Elements transported by air are accumulated in surface soil, while elements transported by water are in deeper layers. The horizontal distribution of elements are mainly influenced by vegetation. - (ZK)
