The paper shows the first results of field studies on behalf of the changes in the utilisation of infrastructure in the town of Tschernjachovsk (formerly Insterburg). The town is an important trading centre for a large rural sourrounding. Since the political system change took place, the first elements of a market-economy have become perceptible in the town (banking facilities, law firms, retail stores...). A new function is developed because of the transit traffic to the neighbouring country of Lithuania. - (IH)
