Because of its federal organisation and its polycentral structure which has developed in the course of history, the Federal Republic of Germany represents, in a certain way, a spatial planning laboratory, within which different models of settlement structure are available for comparative analyses. This contribution considers the question whether the large agglomerations in West Germany differ from each other with regard to commuting links and distances and whether it is possible to derive concepts for a settlement structure inducing less traffic from this. - (MT)
