Regional effects of troop reduction and the conversion of arms

The article starts with an overview of the extent of troop reduction apparent in mid-1992 and the specific problems of arms reduction in eastern Germany. Using a number of case studies, the A. describes the possible effects of troop reduction on the labour market, the infrastructure, housing and properties, local council budgets and land utilization. On this basis Zarth then evaluates the regional distribution of the advantages and disadvantages of troop reduction. The skeleton conditions for converting military production in western Germany are seen as relatively favourable.
