Experiences from six countries (France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, USA, Germany) made available for a research project show that cultural facilities are more and more used as an instrument of urban development programmes. They are among others used to enhance the quality of life and of the urban environment, to set signs for the development or restructuring of urban areas, to re-use redundant buildings or to promote private investments. - (L'A.).
