The reliability of rainfall data from a volunteer observer network in the central United States

Description :
Summer weekly rainfall data collected by approximately 120 untrained volunteers (mainly farmers) using unofficial gauges in McLean County, reveal unambiguous mesoscale patterns. All volunteers used the same clear plastic, funnel shaped gauge that could measure up to 140 mm of rain. The large number of sites precludes random observer bias as a factor. This analysis illustrates that climatologists can safely utilize volunteers observers for research.
