Before the 1991 Gulf War, some of the sensitive areas discussed here had suffered some pollution by oil in particular. However the magnitude of the oil released during the conflict is likely to be greater than any previously encountered and may have a devastating effect upon the marine ecosystem so important to the livelihood of the people of the region and the wildlife it supports.
